I began my partnership with clay and fire in 1969. I use the word partnership with intent. My art, particularly in the realm of Gregg Willman ceramics, is a collaboration between myself and the clay and fire. I want my work to reflect the material, the process, and my contribution. All three should be present, integral, and visible components of any piece.
I enjoy the juxtaposition of the spontaneous stresses, tears, and textures inherent in clay over the smoothness created by my contribution and manipulation of the material, which I explore in my ceramic art classes.
Clay is organic. The unique ceramic pieces I create reflect that. My colors are the result of primal forces converging to metamorphose to reveal their nature and tell their story.
I hope you hear it as I do.
